Oria’s Ethical Jewellery, divine to its core.

by Alice C Doyle

When it comes to ethical jewellery, Oria’s signature collection of exquisite, beautifully crafted, and stylish designs are not just inspired by nature but also give back to nature. Oria’s ethical jewellery is stunning and through its manufacture helps support small scale miners and cooperatives as well as contributing to IUCN conservation work.

oria-girls-tania-kowalski-synnove-saelthun-iiFormed in 2007 by creative duo Tania Kowalski and Synnove Saelthun, they put their love of style and passion for respecting nature and social concerns, into practice. Oria, takes its name from the Latin, meaning ‘golden’. Most people don’t question where the gold in their beautiful jewellery come from. But Oria Ethical Jewellery is golden in principle, as well in as timeless style.

Gold mining can destroy pristine environments, cause deforestation, pollute local rivers and contaminate drinking water. Socially, communities can be displaced, workers forced to work in unsafe conditions for an unfair wage. Mining operators typically set up their operations without respecting the wishes of local communities and the benefits of the mine go to overseas investors or central government, with little of the profit passed back to the local community.

oria-bibbi-earrings1Oria’s ethical collection seeks to address this. They have dedicated themselves to making beautiful, fine jewellery in a socially responsible way. Greatest care is taken in sourcing most ethically produced materials. This helps support small-scale, fair-trade companies that have good working conditions, pay decent wages and do not engage in the use of child labour. The metals, diamonds and coloured stones that are used can be traced from the mine to the consumer in a transparent and highly accountable manner. Miners and stone cutters are paid a good living wage and work in safe conditions. And pearls are farmed with minimum impact to the environment on a farm run according to fair trade protocols.

Such as the exquisite and delicate birds and blossom, or the striking lion necklace to the bold and noble wolf cufflinks. Oria’s also offers offer a bespoke engagement and wedding ring service, with rings of yellow and white gold, set with a range of dazzling gemstones, from aquamarines, pink and blue Sapphires, rubies to diamonds.
