MACS in Malawi an uplifting story

Despite the heavy downpours, we set off winding my way through the Sussex Countryside this weekend to a talk from two inspirational speakers from MACS, Sally Huband and Eileen Eggington both volunteers from the Malawi Association For Christian Support. Their work is both commendable and lifechanging to those people living in Malawi where MACS support and it is stories like these that EcoChic Magazine seeks to celebrate and campaign for.

Clean Clothes Campaign latest on Bangladeshi Fire

Bangladesh unions and international labour rights organisations are calling for immediate action from brands and the government of Bangladesh. A fatal factory fire killed at least 21 workers and injured a further 50. The Garib & Garib Sweater Factory in Gazipur, Bangladesh has been producing knitwear for Swedish retailer H&M, reportedly a main buyer from the factory. The company's own website cites Otto, 3Suisses International, Pimkie, Provera, Lindex, Littlewoods, Wal-Mart and JC Penny as other current and previous buyers. The CCC is currently trying to verify this and other sourcing information provided by workers. The fire, seemingly caused by an electrical short circuit, started on the first floor of the seven story building at 9.30pm on Thursday February 25. As the fire spread, workers became trapped on the floors above.

Cocoa has served the whole of humankind well - not just the tens of thousands of Fairtrade cocoa farmers around the world. From the bitter frothy drink loved by the Mayans, to the family-size tins we squabble over at Christmas. And it's not just delicious. It's packed full of good stuff like alkaloids, theobromine and phenethylamine too. Which doesn't mean that you should stuff your face with it. But at least you've got a good excuse if you do.
